Ruth Thompson joined Partnerships for Schools in June 2011 as Interim Chief Executive, after retiring from the civil service in April 2009 to pursue other interests and opportunities. She was previously Director General, Higher Education from 2006 to 2009.
Ruth was a career civil servant for more than thirty years. She joined with history degrees from Somerville College and St Antony's College, Oxford, her D. Phil involving a formative year doing research in Argentina. She worked in several central government departments - Treasury, Trade and Industry, Social Security and Education.
Since 2009 Ruth has joined the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Policy Institute. She is a Governor of Birkbeck, University of London and also of Staffordshire University, where she chairs the Academic Standards and Quality Committee.
She is Vice Chair of PPC, a south London-based charity providing local
authorities and health trusts with services for children and families
affected by HIV/AIDS. Issues faced by service users include asylum,
substance abuse, mental health, housing, employment and legal matters.
